Modi was a key strategist for the BJP in the successful election campaigns for the state of Gujarat in 1995 and 1998. In October 2001, he became Gujarat's chief minister and served in that role by much longer than anyone else to date. He was a major campaign leader in the 2009 general election which was lost to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) by the BJP headed by the National Democratic Alliance. He led the BJP in the April–May 2014 general election, which resulted in a majority for the BJP in the Lok Sabha, first time any party has done so since 1984.
Modi is a conservative Hindu and a Swayamsevak Sangh Rashtriya leader. He is a controversial figure both in India and globally since his government has blamed for the events following the Gujarat riots of 2002. He has been praised for his economic policies, which are credited with creating an environment for a high rate of economic growth in Gujarat. His government, however, was often blamed for not having a significant positive effect on the state's human development.
