Tamil filmmaker K. Balachander, the director of hits like Ek Duuje Ke Liye and Sindhu Bhairavi and who has won numerous national and Filmfare awards, has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Friday for 2010 for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema, it was announced here Friday.
The award, given on the recommendations of a committee of eminent persons, consists of a Swarn Kamal, a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs and a shawl.
Balachander will be conferred the honour by President Pratibha Patil at the National Film Awards later this year, the dates for which are yet to be announced.
Dadasaheb Phalke Award
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is an annual award given by the Indian government for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. The award is named after Dadasaheb Phalke (Dhundiraj Govind Phalke). He is known as the father of Indian cinema. The award was instituted in the annual National Awards in 1969, the birth centenary year of Dadasaheb Phalke, to honour his invaluable contribution to Indian cinema.

He is an Indian film producer, director and screenwriter. He has directed films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. He is known for his distinct filmmaking style. In his career, he has contributed to the Tamil film industry in South India, and has introduced hundreds of actors in Tamil Cinema including Kamal Hassan, Rajinikanth, Prakash Raj and Vivek. He also own a production house, Kavithalaya Productions. He was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award in 1987.
