Book Review
‘Mulmunakaliloode Oru Jeevithayathra’
Travelogues have always attracted readers. Mathew Abraham Vypana has recently brought out a travelogue entitled ‘Mulmunakaliloode Oru Jeevithayathra’ in Malayalam. It is partially an autobiography. The author gives a detailed description of his journeys through Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rome, London and Kashmir in this book. Very often the author experienced great anxieties in the course of his trips. But he was not a person to surrender before problems. He faced all the problems bravely and went ahead with his programmes. The author starts his narrative with his trip to Ethyopia where he had gone to take up a teaching post. He gives a detailed account of his stay in Adis Ababa, which prided itself as the capital of Africa. After a gap of eight years he shifts his grazing ground to Nigeria, because life Ethyopia was proving to be insecure for Indians. With the change in political climate, Nigeria turned into a land of thieves and dacoits. He gives vivid description of the dangerous situation over there.
It is a well known fact that once you are outside your homeground you get attached to the fellow Keralites. The author gives sample descriptions of such get-togethers of Pravasi Malayalees. The anxieties of the author regarding the welfare of his own family members, the inconsolable sorrow he felt on reading the letter announcing the death of his own father, the emotive experience of taking his mother to a foreign land, etc are really touching to the readers. In these days, when people are craving after wealth, the author’s decision to marry off his younger sister instead of buying a plot of land, is worthy of emulation. The language of the book is lucid and close to conversational style. Thereis a great flow in his writings and so it provides an easy reading material for the common readers. Each of his experience prompts the readers to recall their own life experiences.
Shri. Mathew Abraham is now serving as a senior editor Labour India Publications, Marangattupilly. The distributors of this travelogue is National Book stall, Kottayam.
