Shri. K.Karunakaran was born on July 5, 1918 at Chirackkal in Kannur District to Shri.Thekkedathu Ravunni Marar and Smt. Kannoth Kalyani Amma with birth star “Karthika”, which blessed him with its inherent characteristics of good health and dynamism, and also unstinted support, in plenty, from people. He was born to be a politician and showed political bend from his childhood.
As a child, he manifested tremendous traits of a fine leader and exhibited his leadership qualities in games and sports that he enjoyed. His favorite games were football and volleyball. From his childhood, he was a go-getter; difficulties and challenges would not retract him from achieving what he wanted. Brave and fearless in the face of obstacles, he demonstrated great discipline and determination that friends of his age group could only wish for in their hearts.
He loved to swim and one day he swam across Chirakkal Chira, the longest pond in the area. This was only a small beginning when later on he would swim through troubled waters to become an illustrious political career.
A born fighter, he would not hesitate eagerly to express his mind. For an example, at birth he was named Karunakara Marar, but insisted that he be registered as Karunakaran at Vadakara Lower Primary School. That manifested his ability to think for himself when it comes to issues like caste discrimination.    He suffered from eye infection and his parents took him to Trichur for treatment while in 8th standard. There, he took a liking to arts and drawing. He finally ended up joining MTI Thrissur with an intention of obtaining a diploma in drawing (Chitra rachana).
