Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passes away


One of the great Hindustani classical singers Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passed away this morning in a private hospital here after prolonged illness.He was 88. The legendary vocalist had been admitted to the hospital following renal and respiratory complications on December 31 last year, his family said. A recipient of Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, Joshi is survived by three sons and a daughter.

He was an Indian vocalist in the Hindustani classical tradition. A member of the Kirana Gharana (school), he is renowned for the khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music (bhajans and abhangs). He is the most recent recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, awarded in 2008.
