Bishop Mar John Perumattam, the first Bishop of Ujjain Diocese passed away at 01.00 am on 18-06-2011 at Pushpa Mission Hospital, Ujjain. He was 90 years old. He was the Bishop of Ujjain from 1977 to 1998. The last rites would be held in Ujjain on June 21 at the St Mary's Cathedral under Syro Malabar Major Archbishop Mar Gorge Alancherry. Mar John Perumattam was born in 1921 at Pala. In 1951 he accepted priesthood and had worked at Vadakkekara, Koodaloor, etc. He went to Rome for higher studies and became Rector at the Pala Good Shepherd Convent.
