G. Karthikeyan elected Speaker of Kerala Assembly

VeteranCongress leader G. Karthikeyan was elected the Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly on Thursday.Mr. Karthikeyan won 73 votes against 68 for Opposition candidate A. K. Balan. The election was conducted through secret balloting in the House with pro-tem Speaker N. Sakthan in the Chair. All members of the House were present.

He is an Indian politician and former minister in the Government of Kerala. He is currently the MLA from Aruvikara. He is the son of N. P. Gopala Pillai and Vanajakshy Amma. He was born at Varkala on 20 January 1949. He entered politics through student movements and was a leader of Kerala Students Union (KSU). He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree. He served as the State president of Kerala Students Union. He was a Student member of senate of Kerala University and Secretary of Kerala University Union. He also held various posts in Youth Congress, including State General Secretary and State President. He was the General Secretary of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).He was the Deputy leader of opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
