Peru's Humala widens lead in presidential vote

Peru's former military commander Ollanta Humala on Monday widened his lead to 51.4 percent in the country's presidential elections against his opponent Keiko Fujimori, the National Office for Electoral Processes (ONPE) said. With 94 percent of all the votes counted by the ONPE, the leftist Humala of the Peru Wins alliance widened his margin against 48.6 percent for the Force 2011 party's Fujimori, the 36- year-old daughter of Peru's imprisoned former President Alberto Fujimori. Almost 20 million registered voters went to the polls in Peru on Sunday to elect the South American country's next president for the five-year term from 2011-2016.
The results released by the ONPE so far are consistent with the trend seen in exit polls released at the end of voting Sunday afternoon, where at least three different polls gave Humala a victory of at least 5 percent. In the first round of Peru's presidential elections on April 10, Humala came in first with 31.7 percent of the vote while the right-wing Fujimori got 23.4 percent.
Humala, who was born in capital Lima on June 27, 1962, studied at the Peruvian-Japanese College before joining the Peruvian army in 1982, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. After serving as an army officer for a number of years he was appointed military attache in the Peruvian embassies in France and South Korea from 2001 to 2006.
If the official results from the ONPE confirms the victory of Humala, he will replace Peru's incumbent President Alan Garcia on July 28.
