He saw St. Alphonsa’s funeral

On July 28, 1946, 14-year-old Joseph Pulikkunnel was walking to his home near Bharananganam Church when he saw a group of around 25 people carrying a coffin, chanting prayers.
The curious boy later found out that it was the mortal remains of Sister Alphonsa of the Clarist Convent, who would later be canonised as a saint, the first Indian to be termed so.
Perhaps it was not a coincidence that the teenager who stood by to see her funeral procession later became a famous theologian.
