Popular novelist George Varghese Kakkanadan, one of the pioneers of modern Malyalam literature, passed away on 19.10. 2011. He was 76. Kakkanadan's major works include 'Vasuri', 'Ezham Mudra', 'Ushnameghala', 'Parankimala' and 'Kshathriyan'.
Kakkanadan Born (23 April 1935) in Thiruvalla and later moved to Kottarakkara, Kakkanadan started his professional career as a school teacher. He quit the job to join Southern Railway as an officer and later shifted to Ministry of Indian Railways. He went to Germany to pursue research in physics but abandoned midway.He had won the Kerala Sahithya Akademi award for his novel “Orodha” in 1984. In 2005 he won the Kendra Sahithya Akademi Award and in 2008 he was bestowed with the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Fellowship.
