Spain's Samuel Aranda has won the 2011 World Press Photo Contest


Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda won the 2011 World Press Photo of the Year award. He was honoured for a photograph taken by him on Oct 15 that shows a Yemeni woman holding a wounded relative in her arms after a clash in Yemen. The picture was taken inside a mosque used as a field hospital during clashes in the Yemeni capital.
According to comments of the jury, the winning picture could speak for the situation in the whole region. It also shows a private, intimate side of what went on.
In the 55th annual World Press Photo Contest, the jury gave prizes in nine categories, with entries by 5,247 photographers from 124 countries participating and a total of 101,254 pictures submitted, Xinhua reported.
