Pope Benedict XVI has named seven new saints,in St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican. Seven individuals were canonized by the Pontiff: Kateri Tekakwitha, Maria del Carmen, Pedro Calungsod, Jacques Berthieu, Mother Marianne Cope, Giovanni Battista Piamarta, Anna Shaeffer .
Two of the new saints were Americans-Kateri Tekakwitha, the US's first Native American martyr, and Mother Marianne Cope, a Franciscan nun from the 19th century who took care of leprosy patients in Hawaii. It seemed as if a third saint, Pedro Calungsod, a Filipino teenage martyr from the 17th century, attracted the biggest crowd of all, with Rome 's large Filipino expat community turning out to welcome the country's second saint in flag-waving droves. |
