Oriya writer Pratibha Ray named for Jnanpith Award 2011

Renowned Oriya novelist Pratibha Ray has been chosen for the prestigious Jnanpith Award for 2011 for her contribution to the field of literature. Pratibha Ray is the first Oriya woman and fourth Oriya writer to get the coveted award.Earlier, Gopinath Mohanty (1973), Sachidananda Routray (1986), and Sitakant Mohapatra (1993) were honored.
The award contains a cash reward of '7 lakh, a citation and a bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati.

Pratibha Ray was born in Alabol, a small village in Jagatsinghpur district Balikuda, formerly part of Orissa State district, on 21 January 1943. In 1991, she was the first woman to have received the Moortidevi Award. Ray started literary journey at age 9 and was recognized as an author of her first novel "Barsa Basanta Baishakha," in 1974, followed by "Aranya" in 1977, "Nishidha Prithivi," in 1978, Parichya in 1979, Aparichita in 1979, Punyatoya in 1979, "Ashabari" in 1980, "Ayamarambha" in 1981, and "Nilatrishna" in 1981.
In 1983 the Orissa Sahitya academy award was won by Ray's Shilapadma, in 1991 the Sarala Award was awarded to Yajnaseni (1984).
Pratibha Ray is one of the most widely read Oriya novelists and short story writers. Her novels and stories are deeply and persuasively grounded in the great tradition of story-telling.
