Dr.K.J. Yesudas has won the 5th Sree Chithira Thirunal National Award this year. Yesudas had been selected for his contribution to the field of music and society. The award which carries Rs 1 lakh and a citation, is instituted by the Sree Chithira Thirunal Trust.The selection jury consisted of chairman K Jaykumar, Chalachithra Academy chairman K R Mohanan, P Satheesh Kumar, Rani Nair and R Ravindran Thambi. People who make valuable contributions in the realm of art, literature, science, technology, social service and politics are selected for the award.
The earlier recipients of the award were former ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair, former National Security Advisor M. K. Narayanan, agriculturist M. S. Swaminathan and actor Mohanlal.
