The Mysterious Jatinga: Where Birds Commit Ritual Suicide

Birds flying towards the light sources
Jatinga is a sleepy village on the hills of Assam , a state in the north east of India. Here, every year during the monsoon season thousands of birds mysteriously commit mass suicide by either crashing into the ground or jumping into fire. Most of these birds are local species like Tiger Bittern, Black Bittern, Little Egret, Pond Heron, Indian Pitta. 44 species of birds have been known to take part in this mass suicide.. Ornithologists from all over the world have tried to solve the Jatinga mystery but till date it remains unsolved.

.The most skeptical explanation so far is that the birds are attracted to light but there is no explanation why no where else in the world birds  are so attracted to light sources that they decide to give up their life. In fact, even within Jatinga  the phenomenon is limited only to the Northern part of the  ridge. There had been many attempts to attract the birds by lights of every sort, from traditional bamboo torches to bright artificial lights in the Southern part of the ridge but it failed miserably even though the climate and the condition are same.
Jatinga Festival  from October 27
Brisk preparations are underway to hold the first ever International Jatinga Festival 2010 at Jatinga on October 27-29. A host of dignitaries, delegates and guests from different parts of the state and the country have confirmed their participation in this event. Shri  Janaki Ballav Patnaikji, His Excellency the Governor of Assam is expected to grace the event as the Chief Guest in the Grand Opening Ceremony at 11.00 AM on  October 27 at the Jatinga Village Playground.
A number of programmes have been chalked out to highlight the Dima Hasao district as a potential tourist destination. Eco-tourism like trekking to the Hempeopet Peak, visits to different community villages and tourist spots, exhibition-cum-sale of crafts and cuisine would be some of the highlights of the festival.
This festival is a humble effort towards spreading message of communal harmony amongst the people of the area, sustaining peace and tranquility, emotional integration and removing the spell of despair from the mind-space of the people. And above all, the event would open up new vistas for tourism promotion.
