MP Veerendrakumar wins Kendra Sahithya Akademi award (2010)

Mathrubhumi managing director and noted writer MP Veerendrakumar has won this year's Kendra Sahithya Akademi Award for his travelogue book 'Haimavathabhoovil', published by Mathrubhumi Books.. The book narrates the author's experiences and reflections during an extensive travel through the Himalyan region. The award carries a purse of Rs 1 lakh, a plaque and a citation. This is for the first time that a travelogue book has won the prestigious award.
The book was published in 2007 and has gone into 21 re-prints. The book Hymavathabhoovil has also won many awards including the prestigious Vayalar award. The book was translated into Tamil titled `Vellipanimalaiin melle'.The award was won by U A Khader last year for his book `Trikotoorperuma'.

M. P. Veerendra Kumar was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He is a member of the Socialist Janata (Democratic) political party and the president of Kerala state unit of the party. He is also the chairman and Managing editor of the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi. 
He is a prominent writer in Malayalam, won Kendra Sahitya Akademi Awardin 2010 for his travelogue Haimavatha Bhoovil
Born to Smt. Marudevi Avva and Sri. Padmaprabha Gowder on 22 July 1936, after schooling in birthplace Kalpetta and Kozhikode, he did his Masters in Philosophy from Vivekananda College, Madras. An active politician he was the treasurer and national committee member of the former Samyukta Socialist Party ,state secretary of the Kerala Unit of the Socialist Party, one of the all India Secretaries of the former Socialist Party, Convener of the Opposition Co-ordination Committee in Kerala, Vice President of the former Janata Party, and its President. He Was arrested during the emergency. Currently, he is the President of Janata Dal, Kerala State Committee. During 1987-91 he was elected member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.Later 1996 he was elected to the Indian parliament-lok sabha- from kozhikode constituency and functioned as Minister of state for Labour and later Finance. He took charge as the Managing Director of the Mathrubhumi Printing & Publishing Company Ltd., Kozhikode in 1979. With twelve editions and 9 periodicals, Mathrubhumi is one the largest news houses in the country
