19th March 2012, is the 14th death anniversary of Elamkulam Manakkal Sankaran Namboodiripad (E.M.S.Namboodiripad), the former Chief Minister of Kerala, As the first non-Congress chief minister in independent India, he became the leader of the first democratically elected communist government in the world. He was renowned as a socialist and a Marxist theorist. General Secretary of the CPI(M) for a long period and communist ideologue of International fame.
EMS was born on June 13, 1909, the son of Parameswaran Namboodirippad, at Elamkulam, in Perinthalmanna taluk of the present Malappuram district.
In his early years, he was associated with V. T. Bhattathiripad, M. R. Bhattathiripad and many others in the fight against the casteism and conservatism that existed in the Namboothiri community.
EMS died on March 19, 1998. He was married to Smt. Arya Antharjanam and had two sons and two daughters.
