He was born in Mysore. His father was a headmaster and Laxman was the youngest of six children. His older brother is the famous novelist R K Narayan.

Even before he could read, Laxman was engrossed by illustrations in magazines such as The Strand Magazine, Punch, Bystander, Wide World, and Tit-Bits. He was soon drawing on his own, on his home's boards, walls and doors, and doodling caricatures of his school teachers. Praised for his drawing of a peepal leaf by a friend, he started thinking of himself as an artist in the making.
