Lakshmikutty Amma, the childhood friend and classmate of Saint Alphonsa, passed away.


Saint Alphonsa’s childhood friend and classmate Lakshmikutty Amma of Karottupongavana, Thonnamkuzhy, Kudamaloor passed away at 10.30 pm on July 31,2009 at her ancestral home just 31 days after she had celebrated her 100th birthday on June 31, 2009.
All the pilgrims who visited Saint Alphonsa’s ancestral home mourned her death and visited her house and paid homage to her.
Saint Alphonsa, known by the name Annakutty before she became a nun, and Lakshmikutty Amma studied together in classes one to three in the Govt.L. P. School, Thonnamkuzhy. Annakutty, who lived with her grandmother, used to visit Lakshmikutty Amma at the latter’s house. It was in connection with the canonisation of Saint Alphonsa that the intimacy betweeen the two friends received wide media coverage.
Lakshmikutty Amma used to enthusiastically share her sweet memories of her friendship with Saint Alphonsa with all those who visited her.
She remembered the incident when Annakutty dissuaded her from quarrelling with a naughty boy who toppled her into the mud from the earthen ridge in the rice field, along which they were walking to school one day.She recalled that even in those young days Annakutty adopted the path of suffering- the ‘ring’ she wore throughout her life, in the words of Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
Lakshmikutty Amma said, during her last days of life, in her loneliness, Annakutty visited her and consoled her in her sorrows,”Don’t you have me near you?”, Saint Alphonsa told her in her dreams.
